Cleaning closets and cleaning hearts

I love organizing. I’m known for regularly going through closets, organizing and getting rid of things. My favorite renovation to our house is my closet. It was designed just for me and all my things.

In recent months, I’ve been reading books that have challenged me to clean out my heart’s closet. There are places in my heart where idols are stored, and I need to be rid of them. It’s a tremendous and challenging job. Like one of those closets packed so tightly and in such disarray, you fear opening it because everything would come tumbling out.

When I clean out closets, I often find things I didn’t even know was there. This is true of my heart as well. As I do the hard work of exploring its depths, I find idols of which I wasn’t even aware. This includes placing such things as motherhood and comfort above my relationship with Christ. I also find idols I didn’t think I had anymore. These are ones I thought I had worked through long ago. Like the dust that hides in the corner of my closet, these idols still linger.

  1. I just read Enemies of the Heart. I was so challenged to do some cleaning out of my heart. Now if only I had the same motivation to clean out the corners of my house! YIKES!
