God communicates to us in words and concepts that we understand. Throughout scripture we see examples of God using things that we can understand to explain things to us. Frequently, marriage is used to explain our relationship with God. Agriculture is also used over and over to explain biblical concepts. The book of Proverbs uses analogies and word pictures to explain the way of wisdom. God has condescended himself to our level to reveal himself to us.

It’s important in parenting and in spiritual training of children that we speak to our child’s level. Using word pictures, analogies and parables to explain biblical and spiritual concepts can go a long way in helping them understand what the bible teaches. Relating a sin issue to something they understand on their level can aid in training them in their character development. Reading books that use parables or allegory to explain biblical truth can also be helpful. And the favorite at our house, doing hands on art and craft projects that teach a biblical truth to help make a heart impression.

Here are a few of our favorite activities using these concepts:

1. Activities to teach character building concepts of kindness, putting others first, speaking in love, etc:

Craft project on encouragement

Activity on “tearing down and building up”

Creative activity on “tongue as a flame of fire”

2. Activities to teach biblical concept of what it means to be a Christ follower”

Craft project on storing treasures in heaven

Craft project on understanding our need for God

Activity on God’s word as a light to our path

3. There are a few really good allegories that we read to our kids that explain the gospel. At the end of each book, there are discussion questions that help aid in helping children understand how the allegory relates to scripture:

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan

The Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis

The Lightlings by R.C. Sproul

The Prince’s Poison Cup by R.C. Sproul

The King without a Shadow by R.C. Sproul

The Priest’s Dirty Clothes by R.C. Sproul

Sammy and His Shepherd by Susan Hunt
