Types of Designer

A designer is generally a person who designs something. Designing can be done by an individual or by a company. A designer is responsible for coming up with the specifications and plans for a new product, object or idea, and presenting it to his client so that it can be put into practice. The job of a designer is a very complex one, as it involves a great deal of decision making, creativity, problem solving skills, technical knowledge, communication skills, organizational skills and a lot more.

designer

A design is the blueprint or description of an object, system or process and/or for the implementation of such a plan or specification as the outcome of a design process or an idea, product or procedure. The word ‘design’ is usually used to describe any kind of product, idea or procedure which has been developed through the application of various designing principles. The verb ‘design’ often expresses the entire process of developing a model or idea. So designers can be called the architects of the creation as they give shape to the objects, systems or procedures in the final form.

In order to understand the designer’s role better, let us take an example of a building. An architect drafts the blue prints for a building before they are drawn to paper and after which the architect goes on to make the concrete or steel materials. Now if we consider the designer as an architect, he would first create the blue prints, after which he drafts the concrete or steel materials to be used in building the building. This concept can be applied for all kinds of designer works like creating a new product, designing a new method of manufacturing a product, designing a new way of using a product. Therefore, in short we can say that a designer is the prime mover of the designing process in all these cases.

There are two main types of designers in this context. One is responsible for drawing up the designs, while the other is the one who actually creates the product or service by employing all the ideas derived from the designer. In some cases, both the types of designers are combined in one designer. This happens when a designer is asked to create designs for software or hardware meant for small businesses and he needs to combine both the skills of the designer and the technical knowledge of the entrepreneur so that he can create a product which is not only efficient but also attractive. In this type of situation, it is the technical knowledge that is taken into consideration and not the aesthetic one. A designer who has a flair for colors can certainly help to create the colors for computer software meant for small businesses.

While the artists are involved in creating the pictures or images that form the visual element of a product design, they work with the client to decide upon the colors, the lines and shapes that will appear in the product. These designers go on to draw up the actual product as well as the packaging material for a particular product. In some cases, even translators, designers, and typists are involved in this type of work. When it comes to the graphic design, the image of the product is conceptualized by these designers according to the instructions given by the client and once this is done, the designer sends his design to the client for approval.

Designers work closely with marketing specialists to come up with the actual visual designs for advertising campaigns and making presentations. Motion graphics designers create 3D graphics of items like watches and mobile phones. In some instances, the designers will use video to make a more complete presentation of what the company is offering. The marketing specialists can suggest designs for logos, banners, and the like. A good example is when a person wants to buy a mobile phone he will look at the different mobiles available in the market. The marketing specialist will suggest that particular phone best suits the user’s needs and preference.
