Teach Me Jesus Thursday: Seeking God’s Glory

If you read my article at Desiring God in May titled, “Show Your Kids the Glory” you may remember that I talked about the importance of helping our children see the glory of God. With summer, there are many opportunities for us to explore the wonder of God with our children. I’ve collected a few ideas that I want to share with you today.

1. Gaze at the stars: The bible says that “the heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” Psalm 19:1. Go outside with your kids and look at the stars. Talk about how God knows them all by name. Perhaps watch this video by Francis Chan together or this one from Louie Giglio and talk about the wonder and glory of our Creator God.

2. See the power of the ocean or a rushing river: Ezekiel 43:2 describes the voice of God like that of rushing water. Take your kids to the beach or visit a mountain river. Listen to the sound of the waves crashing on shore or the river stream flowing by.

3. Watch a sunset or sunrise: “And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever” (Revelation 22:5). Imagine what it will be like, having no need for the sun anymore!

4. Study what He’s made: Take time to investigate and learn more about the world God has made. Perhaps your children are interested in ocean creatures or lions or bats or beetles. Read more about them. Talk about God’s amazing creativity in what he has made. This school year, we studied insects and learned amazing facts. Did you know that while termites eat wood, they can’t actually digest it? God made them so that they need to swallow tiny little creatures called flagellates that live in their guts and digest the wood for them. Amazing!

5. Reflect on answered prayers: The Israelites looked back on their history to remember God’s faithfulness. Look back together as a family on all the prayers God has answered. Take turns telling stories of God’s faithfulness in your lives.

6. Listen to music: We are made in the image of God. In essence, we are mini-creators. We reflect his beauty in the things we make. Listen to a piece of beautiful music together such as that of Bach or Handel. Or perhaps listen to some old hymns and talk who wrote them and why.

7. Write a poem or draw a picture: Another way to reflect and describe God’s wonder and glory is through poetry or art. Perhaps read passages such as Job 38, Psalm 8, 19, or Isaiah 40 and encourage your children to write a poem or draw a picture that reflects God’s glory.

How are you seeking God’s glory this summer?
